Being a picturesque religious site of peaceful appearance and utmost reverence, the Buddhangala hermitage stands in an area of about 1280 acres, at a distance of about eight kilometers from the town of Ampara in the eastern province. Five rocks spring from the flat ground, each apart from the other allowing way for water courses to run around them, making the natural beauty of the area increase, especially in the rainy season. The silent green forest gives shelter to many animals ranging form hare to elephant, including leopard and bear who keep a record of long form not doing any harm to any visitor to , or incumbent in, the venerable site.

The highest point of the rock is about 150 Meters. On ascending to the top of it, one can see the Gal-Oya valley on one side. To the south are the Inginiyagala, Vadinagala and the Govinda Pabbatha which was once the realm of Buwanekabahu Äpā.

The Girikumbhila Vihara, where enshrined are the Relics of Venarable Mahinda Thera, is seen from the west, while the eastern plains rich with beautiful stretches of paddy fields are seen to the east.
